Under the 1990 Clean Air Act, a permit program to abate air pollution sources was established. The Clean Air Act is found in the U.S.C. Section 7401 through 7642. Regulations for its implementation are found in C.F.R. 40, Part 50.

The Air Permits service includes:

  • Identification of the specific pollutants that are being released
  • Determination of specific quantities of each pollutant being released
  • Identification of the methods that the owner or operator of the source is taking to reduce the amount of pollution
  • Plans to monitor or measure the emissions
  • Determination of enhanced monitoring programs
  • Record keeping of materials used by the source
  • Periodic inspections
  • Installation of Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS)

Businesses required to obtain air quality permits must pay air permit fees in addition to meeting air permit filing deadlines for compliance.
